Three mayors

guiding on site

Visitors to the building site may be shown around by a mayor this summer!

The mayor of Vestfold County, Per-Eivind Johansen, Tønsberg’s mayor Peter Berg and Nøtterøy’s Roar Jonstang will spend one week each of their holiday this year guiding visitors around the Oseberg building site.

"This is one of the most exciting things happening in Vestfold’s tourist industry in many years and we would really like to do our share. This is entirely in line with Vestfold County Council’s unanimous decision from 2003 to use the Viking Age as an arena to develop business and tourist industry. I am really looking forward to my week,” says Per-Eivind Johansen.  He will be guiding in week 29. Roar Jonstang is at work in week 28 and Petter Berg in week 30.

Textile group out-of-doors

June 2011: Building a Viking ship with all its "accessories” has revitalised many almost forgotten handicrafts. Members of the textile group have spent the winter practising forgotten crafts such as tablet weaving and knotless knitting ("nålebinding”).

This summer the group will practice their crafts outside on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays, and anybody who is interested in learning more is welcome to stop by the site for more information.

Fencing off the building site

Fencing off the building site

June 2011: The Oseberg building site continues to attract a lot of attention. Groups of every kind including lots of school classes have visited the site and enjoyed a guided tour.

In order to let the boat builders work in peace without too many interruptions, the area has now been fenced in with a simple rope fence.

"Naturally, all visitors are welcome to our building site! Most days there will be one or more guides available to show people around and answer questions. If you are in charge of a group that wants guiding, please get in touch with me to find a suitable time,” says Einar Chr. Erlingsen, chair of the board, adding that more volunteer guides are also welcome!

Second strake

soon in place

June 2011. On 17 June, the first plank of the second strake was clinkered to the first.

Work has also started on the fine planning of planks for the third strake of the total of 12 strakes for the Oseberg ship.
