Truls Frednes from Tjøme made plank no. 76.

The man who made plank no. 76

August 2010: A Viking ship the size of the Oseberg ship requires 500 running metres of plank. Plank no. 76 port inside aft is about five metres long, one per cent on the total. Truls Frednes from Tjøme has cut it.

Truls works as a civil engineer in the Grenland Group at Kullerød near Sandefjord. However, his passion is wooden boat, and he was soon inspired when the Oseberg project asked for volunteers.

His passion has obviously blossomed, because the short stay he intended has turned into the entire summer holiday.

"I have always been interested in our Viking heritage and been sorry to see how little of it we exhibit. I therefore think it's important and fascinating that this project is taking our heritage seriously, using the original materials and building methods. With my engineering background, it's also interesting to learn about ...

A wonderful summer holiday

August 2010: 17 year old Jesper Høstmark Bustø from Nøtterøy is never going to forget the summer of 2010. That was the summer he helped build a Viking ship.

He had initially intended to get a regular summer job, but hadn’t found one. However, at Tønsberg’s Medieval festival at the beginning of June, he visited The Foundation for a New Oseberg Ship’s stand and decided to be a volunteer Viking ship builder instead.

"This is probably the last summer I can spend as I wish, without having to think about making money,” says Jesper. "I haven’t regretted this decision for a minute - I have had a great time. The environment is just so friendly with young and old people from different backgrounds working side by side. The only drawback is that my summer holiday is much too short! I would have loved to work much longer,” says Jesper, who is entering his second year of high school ...

Georg André wants to be a smith’s apprentice

August 2010: Georg André Poverud (18) has one big wish: to become a smith’s apprentice. He hopes his efforts with the new Oseberg ship will help him attain his dream.

This summer he has been an eager volunteer and learnt a lot from his cooperation with Viking smith Hans Johnny Hansen.

"I’m interested in history and fascinated by working with iron,” says Georg André pumping the bellows. "It would be really cool to become a traditional blacksmith, but I need an apprenticeship first.”

Chairman of the Foundation, Einar Chr. Erlingsen promises to do what he can to help him. "Georg André is a very skilled young man. We think it’s positive and exciting that he wants to learn such a traditional trade,” says Erlingsen.

Wants to join in: Georg André Poverud (left) wants to become a blacksmith and has worked as a volunteer all summer. Svein Olav Skogli (23) from Offerdal in Sogn is a ...
