The best site in Tønsberg
2007: A unanimous city council in Tønsberg voted to allow the ship to be built on the best site in town, next to Quality Hotel Tønsberg.
"This is just fantastic; the best site in town will generate a lot of attention and interest in our project,” states former leader of the foundation, Gisle Bjørnstad.
Building site: The replica of the Oseberg ship will be built on the lawn outside Quality Hotel.
The Oseberg ship was incorrectly assembled
2007: Our partners the Viking Ship Museum/The
Museum of Cultural Historymuseum, the Viking Ship museum in Roskilde and The New
Oseberg Ship Foundation arranged a seminar at Easter 2007 to discuss new
findings from the computer scanning and visual measuring, as well as the new
drawings and the model. Almost 30 experts in building traditional boats, the
Viking Age and archaeology from Norway, Sweden and Denmark were present.
The report from the seminar was written by archaeologists Knut Paasche (from the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo), Vibeke Bischof (The Viking Ship museum in Roskilde) and boat builder Geir Røvik (the New Oseberg Ship Foundation). The conclusion states that the original boat was incorrectly put together. The mistakes made at that time had a major impact on the ship’s seaworthiness.
Tønsberg will pay for tank testing
2006: In their budget meeting for 2007, the city council in Tønsberg granted NOK 300 000 to the Foundation on the condition that these funds were used for testing a model of the Viking ship in the testing tank at Marintek, NTNU, Norway’s technical university in Trondheim.
